Who Will Take Over at United?

Sir Alex Ferguson has left Edwin Van der Sar out of the squad for the Carling Cup Final. He's saving the big Dutchman for more important trophies. Whoever he picks from Ben Foster and Thomas Kus...Kuzk...Kuszczak would have to be considered the favorite to take over the number one shirt when VDS retires.

Most observers expect this to be Foster. The young Englishman has been convincing in his few appearances, and proved his worth while on loan at Watford. There are concerns, however, about his durability, as he's had major injuries in each of the last two seasons.

The Pole has often been favored by Fergie, but his last performance, in the league against Blackburn, was far from steady. He was partially at fault for Roque Santa Cruz's goal, and spread ripples of panic through his back four on several occasions.

The evergreen VDS will almost certainly keep the number one shirt next season, but we may see Fergie drafting Foster in more frequently - not just for Cup games, but also less-demanding league encounters.

I'd have to guess Sir Alex will sign in a new big-name keeper when it's needed. I'd be surprised if either of the backups get promoted to the permanent starting position.

It'll be interesting to see.....

You may be right, Chris. I think it depends on which keepers are available. The argument for Foster is the proposed UEFA Rule (which they are very serious about) for having a minimum number of homegrown players in the squad in a few years. He may well turn out to be good enough anyway, we'll have to see.
