For me, at least, Inter's Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar is the best goalkeeper in the world right now. For the last 18 months, he has performed at an unparalleled level under the most severe pressure. Yet the next few months promise even more pressure and, possibly, reward. He has a great chance to win the Italian SerieA title and Champions League with Inter, and of course will take his place in goal for Brazil when the World Cup kicks off in June. Brazil will be one of the favorites, naturally, but for once, it will be because of their goalkeeper, rather than in spite of him.
It's hard to overstate how good the save he made from Lionel Messi was in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal. It took every bit of his impressive agility, strength, and competitiveness to get his right fingertips to a wickedly bending ball and turn it around the post. Watch it here, then watch it again.
