Almunia Passes First Test....Just

Arsenal got a point at Anfield, and Manuel Almunia played pretty well. He made some nice pretty saves in each half. But in the 65th minute, he was supremely fortunate when he came for and missed a dangerous inswinging freekick, which Xabi Alonso somehow not only failed to nod into the empty net, but managed to both handle the ball and injure himself at the same time.

Next weekend, it will be people like Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo climing onto the ends of those freekicks. Will the bleached Jens-slayer get away with any mistakes against Manchester United? No he will not.

Elsewhere, new Spurs manager Juande Ramos promised under-fire keeper Paul Robinson a chance to keep his place when he returns from injury. Que pasa, Juande? The guy before you got fired because of Paul Robinson.

Finallly, tonight River Plate host Defensor Sporting in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana quarterfinal. A tumultuous few months for Juan Pablo Carrizo seems to have settled down now, with him playing well and River getting results. The cries for Juan Ojeda's return to goal have all but died down. River have 2 away goals in hand from the first leg, and with Boca and the big Brazilian clubs already knocked out, this looks like their best chance at a trophy in years. So it will be interesting to see how they manage to balls it up.
